Breast Cancer Surgery
Rachael Hayes, MD. ,
Rachael Hayes, MD, joined the surgery team at Lutheran Medical Group in August 2015. Just before joining LMG, she completed the surgical breast oncology fellowship program at the University of Iowa.
As a breast oncology surgeon, Dr. Hayes serves as the point person to evaluate and treat patients who have benign or malignant breast disease. Benign breast disease is any noncancerous breast issue. When patients are diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Hayes completes the surgical portion of disease management as well as coordinates treatment and testing for patients. This may include a single treatment, such as surgery, or a combination of treatments that also includes chemotherapy, radiation, genetic testing and/or imaging. Dr. Hayes focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to treatment.
For surgical procedures, Dr. Hayes makes every effort to ensure incisions can be hidden. She also performs mastectomies and lumpectomies with a focus on oncoplastic techniques, a method of removing breast cancer while retaining the breast’s normal shape and appearance. Dr. Hayes also operates in conjunction with plastic surgeons so reconstruction is immediate for women who desire and qualify for it.
Dr. Hayes graduated cum laude with honors from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in life science, concentration in molecular biology, in 2002. She earned a medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2007. She completed a preliminary internship in general surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2008, a residency in general surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2014, and a fellowship in surgical breast oncology in 2015 at the University of Iowa, which is accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncology.
While in school, Dr. Hayes participated in numerous research projects and served as a breast literature peer reviewer. She served as a research assistant for studies at Ohio State University’s Children’s Hospital/Department of Cardiology and for the departments of plastic surgery and otolaryngology at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Hayes is a resident member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Mississippi Medical Association.
