Rheumatology, a subspecialty of internal medicine, is the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and other disorders of the joints, muscles and ligaments. Rheumatologists diagnose, treat and medically manage patients with these conditions, which can also have an impact on the internal organs, such as the kidneys, lungs, blood vessels and brain. In addition to relieving symptoms, rheumatologists, who collaborate regularly with other specialists, work to slow down or stop the progression of certain diseases and conditions.
