Heart Transplantation

Patients with advanced heart failure who do not respond to medical and surgical therapies may be eligible for a heart transplant. Patients who are candidates are evaluated and undergo a full battery of tests to ensure the benefits of a heart transplant outweigh the risks.

Patients who qualify receive comprehensive care, from pretransplant monitoring to postsurgical care, from a multidisciplinary team that includes cardiologists board certified in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.

In addition to preparing patients and their families for the physical and emotional issues associated with a heart transplant, the team also focuses on educating patients on how to have a successful outcome.

Thanks to advanced surgical techniques and improved medications that help prevent infection and rejection, the transplant team has been successful in exceeding national survival rate averages and improving long-term outcomes and overall quality of life for heart transplant patients.

The heart transplant team includes:

  • Transplant cardiologists
  • Cardiovascular surgeons
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation specialists
  • Nurses
  • Dietitians
  • Pharmacists
  • Social workers
  • Transplant coordinators
